Recovery after Micro-TESE: returning to everyday life

Recovery is personal. The extent of the procedure, anaesthesia, previous surgery and your usual activities influence the advice you receive. Your own surgical team’s discharge instructions take priority over general information online.

Recovery after Micro-TESE: returning to everyday life

Before you leave the hospital

Make sure you understand wound care, the prescribed pain-relief plan and whether supportive underwear is advised. Arrange assistance and transport as directed after anaesthesia. Ask who to contact overnight or at weekends. The decision to discharge you depends on your recovery and clinical assessment, not simply on how many hours have passed.

Activity should return gradually

Discomfort, swelling or bruising may occur after testicular surgery. Ask the surgeon when you can shower, return to work, lift weights, exercise, drive and resume sexual activity. A desk-based job and heavy physical work do not require the same plan. Avoid comparing your recovery with another patient’s; neither feeling well nor having little pain proves that deeper tissues have healed.

Know when to seek medical help

Increasing or severe pain, rapidly enlarging swelling, persistent bleeding, fever, wound discharge or difficulty passing urine require prompt contact with the treating team. If symptoms are severe or urgent help is unavailable, seek emergency care. These concerns belong with the surgical service rather than waiting for a routine fertility appointment or a reply through the consultation form.

Arrange follow-up and obtain separate reports

Follow-up may assess the wound, persistent discomfort and hormone function, including testosterone when indicated. Request the operation note, embryology findings and any pathology report. Physical recovery and the sperm-search result are separate issues. Do not interpret a comfortable recovery as successful retrieval, or assume that an unsuccessful search means normal hormone follow-up is unnecessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I travel home or return to work?

Ask the operating team before booking. Anaesthesia, travel distance, job demands and recovery determine individual advice; a universal number of days would be misleading.

Can testosterone fall after sperm retrieval?

It can in some patients. Report persistent symptoms and discuss whether hormone assessment and follow-up are needed.
